Frequently Asked Questions

What if English isn’t my first language?

HHT can arrange written translation of documents and spoken interpretation.  Ask your Housing and Maintenance Officer or your Support Officer for details.

What if I can’t pay my rent?

It is very important that you pay your rent on time, so please contact your Housing and maintenance Officer or your Support Officer immediately if you are having problems paying.  HHT staff can help and advise you on how to manage your income and outgoings.

What if I want a pet?

As not all properties are suitable for pets you need to speak to your Housing and Maintenance Officer if you want to keep a pet.  Please note that permission will not be granted for any dogs covered by the Dangerous Dogs Act.

What if I want to take in a lodger?

You have the right to take in a lodger but you must not sub-let the whole of your property or create a situation of over-crowding.  You must get written permission if you want to take in a lodger – speak to your Housing and Maintenance Officer or your Support Officer for details of what you will need to do.

What if I make a complaint and it isn’t upheld?

Even in cases where a complaint isn’t upheld (agreed with), we will still make every effort to reach agreement as we aim to provide a good service to all our tenants.

What if I accidentally break a window?

We expect you to carry out some small repairs and replacements, such as changing fuses, plugs, light bulbs and batteries.  You are responsible for broken glazing unless you can give us a crime number or it is caused by suspected harassment or you can show it was not caused by you.

What if I lose my keys?

HHT does not keep spare sets of keys for any of its homes so you are responsible for replacing any internal door locks.

What if I smell gas?

If you smell gas, turn off all gas appliances immediately, open all windows and put out all naked flames.  Turn off the gas supply by closing the handle next to your gas meter and ring the Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

What if I don’t like my neighbours?

We can only get involved if you have a genuine problem with your neighbours.  We do not get involved in personal arguments or non-housing related matters.

What if my neighbours are really noisy?

First of all you should try speaking to whoever is causing the problem, as they may not be aware that they are disturbing you and a compromise may be reached.  Tell your housing officer or advice and information officer and they will tell you if we can help.

Insuring your possessions

We strongly recommend that you arrange home contents insurance to cover your possessions for fire, theft, storm, burst pipes, flood and other risks.

HHT does not insure the contents of your home or your personal possessions.
